Sound & Sea Tour

A 15 mile round trip from the shore of Silver Lake through the village of Ocracoke with stops at the Ocracoke Lighthouse, the NC Land Conservancy sound-side trail and beach at Springer’s Point, the CHNS beach via Ramp 70, and back through the village of Ocracoke to the British Cemetery before returning to Silver Lake.

Pamlico Sound, Sea Tour, Tram Tour, this tour also features the Lighthouse, Springer's Point Nature Preserve, the National Seashore and British Cemetery.  After visiting the Ocracoke Lighthouse, the Sound & Sea Tour will take a quick 5 minute drive to Springer’s Point Nature Preserve where folks will have 30 minutes to disembark and walk the 0.5 mile loop trail through maritime forest to the shores of Pamlico Sound, preserved by the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust. With views of Portsmouth Island and Teach’s Hole where Lt. Maynard of the British Navy attacked and killed Blackbeard the Pirate aboard the Queen’s Anne Revenge, Springers Point is an increasingly popular destination for families with small children given the usually gentle waves of the Sound.

 

This tour is intended to beat the crowds to Springer’s before continuing on to the Atlantic Ocean beach of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore via Ramp 70. The natural history of the beach including how barrier island are formed, types of wildlife (sea turtles, marine mammals, fishes, birds) that make the beach their home or territory, and other natural features of the beach will be explained. Following this 30 minute visit to the National Seashore, this tour will return to the shores of Silver Lake following a stop at the British Cemetery. Tour Length: 2 hours. Drive Time: 1 hour. Spring Point Time: 30 minutes. Beach Time: 30 minutes.
